SCHOOL DESCRIPTION
Since 1966, La Salle has been providing a quality, Catholic, college-preparatory education
to the students of the Portland/Vancouver metropolitan area. In 2010-2011, La Salle is
proud to host 15 international students from Vietnam, China, Mexico, Korea and Thailand.
La Salle serves a socio-economic diverse student population with about 20% minority
and 33% non-Catholic. La Salle’s small classes allow for a highly personalized
education, with teachers who truly know each student. With a student teacher ratio of
13:1, average class size of 22 and 23 Advanced Placement and honors courses, nearly
100% of La Salle students attend the college of their choice upon graduation. In fact, La
Salle’s Class of 2010 earned more than $11 million in college scholarships.
La Salle is sponsored by the Brothers of the Christian Schools and is one of 1,600
Lasallian educational institutions located in over 80 countries worldwide. The Christian
Brothers were founded in 1682 by St. John Baptist de La Salle, an aristocrat in Rheims,
France. De La Salle was also a Roman Catholic priest and canon lawyer, who used the
whole of his inheritance to further the education of poor children, the children of 17th
century France’s artisan class. Named Patron Saint of Teachers by the Catholic Church in
1953, De La Salle’s key tenet was that true teaching is rooted in an authentic love of
students and that a truly effective teacher-student relationship must be based on practical
affection and mutual respect. This core philosophy remains a unifying characteristic of
Lasallian schools worldwide.
